Does Unit Analysis Help Students Construct Equations?

چکیده

Previous research has shown that students construct equations for word problems in which many of the terms have no referents. Experiment 1 attempted to eliminate some of these errors by providing instruction on canceling units. The failure of this method was attributed to the cognitive overload (Sweller, 2003) imposed by adding units to the equations and to the mechanical nature of the intervention (P. W. Thompson, 1994). Experiment 2 used contrasting pairs instruction (D. L. Schwartz & Bransford, 1998) that required students to determine which of 2 mathematical expressions referred to a real-world quantity. This brief practice at the beginning of the session significantly increased the number of correct equations relative to a control group that practiced constructing equations. The contrasting cases instruction can help prepare students for additional instruction, such as the iconic manipulations used in the Animation TutorTM (Reed & Hoffman, 2006; see also Reed, 2005) modules.

Reliability Measures Improvement and Sensitivity Analysis of a Coal Handling Unit for Thermal Power Plant

The present paper investigates the reliability and sensitivity analysis of a coal handling unit of a thermal power plant using a probabilistic approach. Coal handling unit is the main block of a thermal power plant and it is necessary for a good function of a power plant that its power supply, which is dealt in coal handling unit, must function continuously without any obstacle. The configurati...

English and Persian Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions of the Construct-(ir)Relevance of Language Proficiency in the Assessment of Literary Competence

Of the many dilemmas facing the assessment of literary competence, one is the extent to which language should constitute part of the target construct intended to be measured. Some argue for the construct-irrelevance of language and hence recommend that it be eliminated or minimized in favor of an exclusive focus on literary competence. In practice, this does not seem to be the case, as language...

Does Type of Pain Predict Pain Severity Changes in Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis? A Longitudinal Analysis Using Generalized Estimating Equations

Background & Objective:  Pain is a common symptom among people with MS. In the majority of MS patients, pain is chronic in nature, but it can change over time. The objective of this study was to determine if pain type can predict pain severity changes in individuals with MS over time.  Materials & Methods:  The research method was a longitudinal design that evaluated pain type and severity at...

From Geography to physics: How does geography help students learn motion?

The GPS units are presented as a powerful technology enabling students to learn basic ideas of motion, along with concepts of physical geography. The use of GPS technology in this way is a form of studio based education (close-to-life collaborative construction contexts). Such a context enables students to construct and analyze their own data, thus providing an opportunity to develop critical g...

Modelling students ' construction of energy models in physics

One of the main differences between novice and expert problem solving in physics is that novices mostly construct problem representations from objects and events in the experimental situation, and experts construct representations closer to theoretical terms and entities. A main difficulty in physics is in interrelating these two levels, i.e. in modelling. Relatively little research has been do...
